Science Confirms Domestication Alters Bunny Brains

Story at a glance:
  • Recent studies reveal that domestication appears to have altered the brain architecture of rabbits
  • MRI scans of 8 pet and 8 wild rabbits raised in similar environments showed that the brains of the pets had a smaller amygdala, or fear-sensing area of the brain, and a larger medial prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain that controls the fear response
  • The scans also revealed a generalized reduction in white matter structure in the pet rabbits, suggesting they have compromised information processing abilities that explains their slower reaction times and placid temperament as compared to their wild counterparts
